Stacey Horowitz, founder of SFAC, receives the Jefferson Award Medal for Public Service

stacey-medal The Jefferson Award for Public Service Ceremony was held January 15, 2014 at the San Francisco Jazz Center.  The event was hosted by KPIX Channel 5 and KCBS and emceed by reporters Kate Kelly and Sharon Chin.  KPIX president Bruno Coen, and CBS Radio Sr. VP Doug Harvill presented welcoming remarks. The guest speaker was former 49er Ronnie Lott, founder of All Stars Helping Kids. Jazz music was enjoyed by all and a reception followed the award ceremony.

It was an honor to be surrounded by fellow awardees of all ages, from teens to those nearly 100 years young.  Learning about their lives and what motivated them to begin their life-changing work was incredibly inspiring.

About the Jefferson Awards

Founded in 1972 by Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, U.S. Senator Robert Taft, Jr. and Sam Beard, the Jefferson Awards are presented on both a national and local level.  Locally, Jefferson Awards recipients are ordinary people who do extraordinary things without expectation of recognition or reward.  By honoring the recipients, it is the goal of the Jefferson Awards to motivate others to become involved in community and public service.

My Dream

I had a dream....it was to provide impoverished families abroad with the ability to raise themselves from poverty, to improve their lives and communities, and to also help charitable organizations right here in the U.S. to achieve their missions by sharing our net proceeds with them, based upon how you, our shoppers, direct them.

What are your dreams for the world?

Please visit Shopping for a Change for our clearance sale and Valentine’s Day items.

Domenico Winery Ladies Night Fair Trade Event Huge Success

On December 3rd we participated in the Domenico Winery's Ladies Night Shopping event. Stacey, founder of Shopping for a Change, was there along with her husband and son, Ken and Avi, and volunteer helpers Sandy Shepler and Martha Chen. We were swamped for the three hours of the event, and sold over $2300. Showed mostly jewelry, with a smidgen of home decor and babies items.  The hand knitted organic cotton animal sweaters sold very well during these past two live sales events, and the Pebble toys/rattles are gaining popularity.
